We are delighted to announce that we supported D-Day veterans who attended the annual commemorations of the Normandy Landings, which took place on 6 June 1944.
Our financial contribution helped our D-Day veterans to get over to Normandy this year on the 79th anniversary of the landings that too place in early June 1944.
The Spirit of Normandy Trust is a small, charity run entirely by volunteers and they rely on the generosity of others to undertaken this annual pilgrimage for those whose courage and tenacity achieved so much for their country during what was a pivotal campaign, which helped to shorten the length of WWII.
This year the charity took over nine veterans and one war widow, as well as carers and supporting family members. The average age of the veterans is now 98 and in their declining years they gain so much from revisiting the site of the landings and battles.
Veterans were able to visit the new, stunning British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, Colville Montgomery, Bayeux Cemetery, Caen and Arromanches-les-Bains. The veterans also joined with elements of the British Army for other commemorations as well as meeting local dignitaries and visiting the graves of their fallen comrades, which is so important for those who did return home.
